“Children need multi-sensory experiences to grow and develop”

Sensory boards can be a fantastic learning activity for children with autism and sensory processing disorder, and even children who are developing in general. It has many great benefits including building cognitive, sensory and fine motor skills. They also help children build new connections in the brain's pathways.

As children play they learn about their environment, gain essential skills, and have a great time doing it. If we think about how much fun our infants and toddlers have when they push a toy off the table and learn about gravity. Learning occurs when they watch the toy fall (visual sense), listen to the sound of the toy hitting the floor (auditory sense) and then doing it on numerous other occasions as they find it fun (motivation and repetition).

The sensory systems include sight (visual), hearing (auditory), touch (tactile), smell (olfactory), taste (gustatory), balance (vestibular), and body awareness (proprioception). Children’s brains develop effectively when they have many different sensory experiences throughout their day. Once they are able to accurately take in sensory information, and organise it, they are then able to engage in functional activities. It is the repeated exposure to a wide range of experiences that helps their sensory systems work effectively together. This process of learning has to occur before a child is able to independently complete tasks, such as crawling, walking, riding a bike, opening a container, writing, self-care tasks, playing sports, and successfully engage in the world around them.

Our 11 in 1 Sensory Board supports development in:

  • Self-dressing and Fine-Motor skills (e.g., doing up buttons and shoelaces)
